How to get exemption in CA Final FR

What are the passing requirements for CA Final FR?
First – A applicant shall ordinarily be declared to have passed in both of the groups simultaneously if he or she –
- Secures at 1 sitting a minimum of 40 per cent marks in every paper of each of the group and minimum of 50 per cent of marks in the aggregate of all the papers of any of the groups, or
- Secure at 1 sitting a minimum of 40 per cent of marks in any paper of both of the groups and a minimum of 50 per cent marks in the aggregate of entire papers of both groups taken jointly.
Second – A applicant shall be declared to have passed in the group if he or she secures at 1 sitting a minimum of 40 per cent marks in every paper of the group and the minimum of 50 per cent marks in the aggregate of every paper of that group.
What are the rules regarding exemption?
- An applicant who has appeared in entire papers comprised in unit/group and fails in 1 or more papers comprised in that unit/group but secures a minimum of sixty per cent of the marks in any paper or papers of that unit/group shall be qualified for the exemption in FR paper or papers in the next 3 following exams.
- He or she shall be declared to have passed in that unit/group if he or she secures at 1 sitting a minimum of 40 per cent marks in every one of the papers of that unit/group and a minimum of 50 per cent of the full marks of entire the papers of that unit/group including the paper in which he or she had secured a minimum of 60 marks in their earlier exam.
- He or she shall not be qualified for any more exemption in the remaining papers of that unit/group until he or she has exhausted the exemption already granted to him in that unit/group.
- The suggestions of the above paragraph clarified below, you have to appear in all the papers of the unit/group. You much have failed in the unit/group and should have secured a minimum of sixty marks in any paper of the unit/group.
The CA Final Exemption is automatic and will set up indicated in the list of marks issued by the institute.
This is valid for 3 immediate succeeding examinations and will be carried forward mechanically for the next 3 exams. A candidate shall be declared to have passed in a unit/group if he secures at 1 sitting a minimum of 40% marks in every paper of the unit/group and a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of every paper of that unit/group. For those purpose of arriving at the aggregate marks, 60% or more marks secured earlier will also be taken into account.
The as-long-as exemption is 1 or more paper of a unit/group, brought forward from an earlier attempt is subsisting, no more exemption in any paper in that unit/group will be provided, even if one secures 60 per cent or more marks in any paper in that unit/group.
Process for availing Exemption in CA Final FR exams
There’s no process for availing exemption and this is automatically granted to the candidate by the ICAI and the similar would be described in the mark sheet awarded to the candidates. Once an exemption is awarded, the candidate shall not be qualified for any other exemption in that unit or group he has already exhausted the exemption awarded to he or her in that group.

From May 2014 exam onwards, CA candidates can also check online if their an exemption in a particular subject (FR) is valid or not if the next try.
What are the advantages of getting an exemption?
If you’ve scored exemption in any paper, then you’re failing in another subject of the group, you’ll not have to provide the exam subject (in that you scored exemption)
Note: even if you score zero marks in other papers of the group, in which you’ve failed, an exemption will be definitely availed to you for the papers in which you scored sixty or more marks.
What’s the surrender exemption?
If you do not want to avail exemption you scored then it stands surrender. You’ll have to appear for the examination again in the next try for the subject in which you need sixty or more in the earlier trial.
Why candidate surrender exemption?
If you claimed, then you do not have to appear in all the papers of your next try. ICAI allots Ranks to the peak 50 candidates. And to get the rank, you’ve to appear for all the papers of both groups. Now if you get exemption then you would not appear for all papers and hence you’ll not qualify for the rank, this is the single reason a few candidates surrender exemption.
